Who needs respirator fit testing?

Fit testing is mandatory for workers in high-risk industries where respiratory hazards exist. Common industries requiring fit testing include:

Silica and weld fume

Silica and welding fume work

Two of the hazards that most often bring us to a site are respirable crystalline silica and welding fume, and the rules around both have tightened.

For silica, the WHS regulations do something they rarely do. Where a respirator is relied on as a control for processing a crystalline silica substance, the regulation names the standards that equipment has to comply with, and AS/NZS 1715:2009 is one of them. On that work, fit testing is backed by the regulation itself, not only by the standard.

For welding, the exposure standard for welding fumes was cut from 5 mg/m³ to 1 mg/m³ in January 2024, and welding fume has been a Group 1 carcinogen since 2017. From 1 December 2026 hexavalent chromium loses its numerical exposure limit altogether, which puts more weight than ever on whether the respiratory protection actually seals.

A respirator only delivers its rated protection if it fits the person wearing it. That is what we test.
