What is respirator fit testing?
Respirator fit testing is a critical safety procedure designed to verify that a tight-fitting respirator provides an effective seal on the wearer’s face. A proper fit ensures that airborne contaminants such as silica dust, asbestos, welding fumes, diesel particulate matter (DPM), and infectious aerosols are effectively filtered out.
As per Safe Work Australia and Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, fit testing must be conducted:
- Before using a new respirator
- At least annually or when there are changes to the wearer’s face shape (e.g., weight loss, dental work, or facial surgery)
- Whenever a different make, model, or size of respirator is introduced.
